Men’s and women’s runners-up at PSU Abington Invitational

ABINGTON, PA — After a strong season opener last weekend, the Maritime College men’s and women’s cross country teams were back in action Saturday at the PSU Abington Invitational at Lorimar Park. Facing a full field of Division III opponents, the Maritime men finished second overall out of 15 teams. The Privateer women also took second place in a field of nine teams.

Jack Lehnhardt (Dunkirk, MD) finished seventh in the men’s race, running 8,000 meters in 29:27.20. Jake Mundok (Lewes, DE) also cracked the top 10, placing ninth in 29:34.50. CJ Elwell (Charlestown, RI) took 17e in 30:24.91, while Jonas Yonks (Mount Sinai, NY) posted a time of 32:04.53, which was good for 32n/a square. Declan O’Connor (Westfield, NJ) caught 43rd place in 32:50.50, and it was followed by Peter Lorino (West Nyack, NY) in 47e (33:05.17) and Dean Butkiewicz (Middle Village, NY) in 49e (33:27.41).

Maritime was the only team with two top 10s and recorded a team score of 108 points. Penn State-Harrisburg had a team score of 89 points to win the tag team title. The individual winner was Mitchell Campbell of Penn College (28:02.26).

On the women’s side, Maritime placed three in the top eight and six in the top 20. Rebecca Zareva (Allen, TX) placed fourth overall with a time of 27:26.24 over 6,000 meters. Adelle Leger (Middletown, NY) was the second Privateer to cross the line, capturing sixth place in 28:11.40, and Rachel Zareva (Allen, TX) took eighth place in 28:36.86. Mary Cirelli (Orland, Pennsylvania) (16e31:41.92), Aisling Donnelly (New Town, NY) (18e32:01.46) and Caravel Losch (Butler, Pennsylvania) (19e32:05.17) all ended within 24 seconds of each other, while Tori Gay (Whiteford, MD) clocked 37:41.34 which was good for 39e square.

The Privateers’ team score was 52 points, putting them well ahead of all teams except St. Mary’s (MD). Led by individual winner Madeline Blaisdell (26:30.62), St. Mary’s (MD) took the team crown with a total of 31 points. Running untethered, FDU-Florham’s Shannon DiCristina clocked the fastest overall time, 25:37.71.

On Friday, Maritime returns to Pennsylvania for the Paul Short Run, hosted by Lehigh University. The men’s race starts at 9:30 a.m. and the women will follow at 10:15 a.m.
