Close finish at the Régate des Marins 2022

SAILING: Lively competition and better than expected wind conditions made for a hugely successful 5th Sailors Regatta last weekend (March 11-13), with this year’s 3-day event, hosted by Phuket Yacht Club (PYC), with extremely tight races taking place around Chalong Bay and the surrounding islands south of Phuket.

“It was a great regatta, and we were lucky to have good winds this year, which was more than expected and expected,” commented Race Director Warwick Downes. “There were tight races between the boats with very narrow winning margins in some fleets.

Matt McGrath was the Senior Race Director who, along with the race organizers, was more than pleased with this year’s exciting races, with increased competition, particularly in the Multihull OMR and Firefly 850 class. combined last year, this year they were separated, which increased the spirit of competition.

The Multihull OMR category saw focused navigation and tactics with Bonza and Saffron battling well. Although Bonza had to loop after crossing the start line on the final day of the race, they still managed to recover their position and win their class.

The competition was extremely tight, as expected, with the ongoing battle between Twin Sharks and Voodoo in the Firefly 850 class. After Switch 1st and 2n/a Race placements throughout the three days, Voodoo finally advanced to victory as the Twin Sharks were unable to hold on to their winning result from last year.

Among the monohulls, Jessandra II and Phoenix kept their first places and Kinnon performed well despite their heavy weight.

Final rankings:

Multihull OMR: Bonza skippered by Warwick Downes

Firefly 850 class: Voodoo skippered by Hans Rahmann

IRC monohull: Phoenix skippered by Niels Degenkolw

Monohull PHS: Jessandra II skippered by Andrew McDermott

This regatta saw focused boat handling, a range of sailing skills, strategy and tactics and PYC is already preparing for its next event, a rally from Ao Chalong to Koh Phi Phi and back, scheduled to take place at above Songkran.
