By Aaron Humes: Two Canadian sailors whose ship ran aground in Lighthouse Reef were rescued by the Coast Guard on Thursday evening.

After receiving the call at approximately 8:16 p.m., personnel proceeded to a point two nautical miles south of Hat Caye where they encountered a sailboat named ‘JOLIE BRISE II’, aground with approximately two feet of water in the cabin.

The Canadians were taken to Forward Operating Base Half Moon Caye where they received the necessary assistance. Officers from the Belize Coast Guard and Belize Audubon Society Rangers remain on scene and provided security for the night.

On Friday, the Coast Guard and the Belize Audubon Society made an initial assessment of the extent of the damage to the reef and the vessel. They found that the ship will need a salvage operation which will be guided by the Ministry of Environment and the Belize Ports Authority.

The Belize Coast Guard transported the two Canadians to Belize City where members of the Belize Port Authority, Belize Police Department, Immigration Department, Environment and Health Department took in charge of the case. The Coast Guard and the Belize Audubon Society will maintain a security presence for the vessel until the salvage operation is complete.
