![]() From The Sea: its History and Romance, Vol II, by Frank C.Bowen, p.110 Dunkirk Monamy's extraordinary presentation of the menace of Dunkirk, a port described by Bowen as "a nest of privateers and corsairs from the very beginning of its history", prompts deeper enquiry into what sources the painter used for his battle plans and panoramic images, and how he adapted them for his own purposes. Besides the personal reports and sketches of serving officers and seamen, there are two obvious categories: prints and maps. Alicante Barcelona Lisbon Constantinople Porto Bello Louisbourg The print is from Ralph Hyde's publication A Prospect of Britain: the Town Panoramas of Samuel and Nathaniel Buck, Pavilion Books, 1994, no 28. My belief is that Monamy based his painting on the Buck print. See here. He has marginally lowered the viewpoint, and retained the composition, but changed the ships.
