ROYAL OCCASIONS starboard quarter views A. 40½ x 50 signed P.Monamy Pinxt. Buckingham Palace. In 1818 this painting was in Kensington Palace. B. 27 x 46 signed P.Monamy; Ellis & Smith 1937 Described as: "George I landing in England from HMS Peregrine, 1714"

These two paintings seem to me reasonably clearly related. The differences demonstrate what I am coming to believe to be the kind of variations characteristic of Monamy, with alterations in the disposition of the sails and the way the light falls on them. It may be that they were originally of almost comparable dimensions, since it looks as if the top of picture B could have been trimmed by as much as a foot or so. Picture A has plenty of sky to spare. There may be yet a third variation of this composition, as I saw a rather similar canvas during the 1980s, the details of which I happened not to record. It may have been the same painting as picture B, however. | | The pen and wash sketch juxtaposed with painting A, left, in spite of many obvious differences, also appears to me to bear some remoter relationship to it. More a matter of the significance attaching to the occasion, which I would prefer to date to circa 1727, or later, and, pro tem, am inclined to link with George II rather than George I. Click on picture below for more on sketches and drawings. |

Some even more remote connection with paintings A and B?
