SMALL PRINTS These prints measure approximately 6 x 10, and are of uncertain date. According to Kaldenbach's flow-chart, John Bowles issued his first catalogue in 1731, and Carrington Bowles his in 1784. Are these prints from 1784 at the earliest? Could John Bowles have existed as a separate enterprise for 53 years? No engraver's name is supplied, but he has captured the stylistic differences between the two artists, by conveying the darker palette and greater detail of van de Velde in prints 3 and 8. Numbers 6 and 7 are missing. One of these may have been entitled Hazy Weather; see Parker Galler Catalogue, date to be checked (perhaps c 1950), item 798. This is described as a coloured line engraving, 6½ x 10¼, showing shipping off the coast, after P.Monamy. The statement that it was published circa 1740 must be erroneous.
