Life of Captain Thomas Philip Durell c 1750/60 A precise date of birth cannot be established from the career details at hand. 1771-1772 Two documentary records read: "These are to Certify the Right Honorable the Lord's Commissioners for executing the Office of Lord High Admiral of Great Britain and Ireland ... that Mr Thomas Durell served in quality of Captain's Servant on board His Majesty's Ship the Pembroke under my Command from the 1st of July 1769 to the 22nd of July 1770, then Able Seaman to the 24th of June 1771, then Midshipman to the date hereof during which time he behaved with Diligence, Sobriety and Obedience.Given under my hand on board the said ship in Gibraltar Bay the 17th August 1771 Ph.Durell"Similarly: " .... that Mr Thomas Durell served in Quality of Midshipman on board His Majesty's Ship the Niger under my command from the 11th August 1771 to the date hereof, during which time he behaved with Diligence, Sobriety and Obedience.Given under my hand on board the said ship in Mahon Harbour the 21st March 1772 Ph.Durell"The identity of Ph.Durell, signatory of the above documents, is not yet known.| 8/4/1777 | Note of a Masonic Certificate (?) | | ?/?/1778 | Able Seaman's Certificate. There is a confusing quantity of unverified information supplied about individuals named Durell on the IGI. However the two items below, from the IGI, are firmly verified. They make it clear that Lieutenant Durell went through two marriage ceremonies with his wife, Ann(e) Roberts.
