van de velde cannon shot

Cannon Shot Variations
by various painters

The paintings below all derive from van de Velde's Cannon Shot

Above, right, an earlier photograph of the painting below.

25½ x 30, unsigned. Most recently attributed to Samuel Scott: formerly Monamy
Why not, say, Woodcock? --- who made 40 copies of van de Velde's paintings.

The above painting is one of numerous emulations of van de Velde's original composition. While Monamy very probably produced one or two of these, see below, there are many other possible authors, of whom Scott is only one. The picture immediately following was donated to Painter-Stainer's Hall, and was deemed to be a 19th century copy by Michael Robinson, when he visited the hall with me in about 1980. At that time it was mis-labelled as the work donated to the Hall by Monamy in 1726: this mistake has now been corrected.

Judged by Michael Robinson to be a 19th Century version:     must be two photos of the same painting.

Confidently held to be a coach panel, painted by Monamy,
owned by Admiral John Byng, 1704-1757. See here.

A Cannon Shot with Dutch colours
but without the shot

The proportions of the view at right, another Cannon Shot variant, invites pairing with the storm panel scene, at left. See here.
