A motley medley of paintings, photographs, pictures of archaeological finds and artefacts, and a miscellany of other artworks, which have struck me as in some manner illustrative of The Seafarer, have piled up in my files since 1994. Contemplation of them has deepened my appreciation of what, in the words of Olof Arngart, appears to underlie "its verbal surface". They seem to have given me a better perception of the dilemmas of man's existence, since the anabasis of self-awareness compelled him to wonder. Some people, no doubt, may see no connection between the Anglo-Saxon's words, and these pictures. |
